The Buprenorphine "Half and Half" Course

In an effort to provide training in a way that is most flexible for the practicing physician AAAP has created the "Half and Half" course.

The first "half" of the course consists of participants taking 3.75 hours of CD-ROM training containing five modules from the AAAP on-line buprenorphine course.

The second "half" of the course is a 4.25 hour face-to-face classroom-style training in a small group setting with a course director who has already obtained the waiver to practice with buprenorphine and is doing so in his/her community.

The combined online and face-to-face training provides the 8 hours needed to obtain the waiver to use buprenorphine in office-based treatment of opioid dependence.

Who Should Attend

This training is recommended for any physicians with experience and/or interest in treating opioid dependence. This program is specifically recommended for primary care, psychiatric, HIV and addiction medicine specialists.

Sponsors

These courses are generally sponsored by organizations or teaching institutions-for example, residency training programs, hospitals, medical centers, state agencies.

Drug Addiction Treatment Act of 2000

The Drug Addiction Treatment Act of 2000 (Public Law 106-310, Section 3502) permits physicians who are trained or experienced in opioid addiction treatment to obtain waivers to prescribe certain narcotic drugs in Schedule III, IV, or V of the Controlled Substances Act in their office practices or in a clinic setting, for the treatment of opioid dependence. Both buprenorphine and the combination of buprenorphine with naloxone are approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for use in the detoxification and maintenance treatment of opioid dependence.
