Buprenorphine and Office-Based Treatment of Opioid Dependence

Turnberry Isle Hotel Miami, Aventura, Florida

Saturday, December 10th 3:00pm-7:00pm

Program Overview

AAAP is sponsoring a workshop for physicians on the use of prescribing buprenorphine for the treatment of addiction of opiates. This training meets U.S. Department of Health and Human Services certification requirements for obtaining the waiver to prescribe buprenorphine. AAAP developed a new way of training which is called the “Half and Half” Course—3.75 hours of on-your-own-training and 4.25 hours of face-to-face training with an instructor. One “half” of the course is 3.75 hours of CD training containing modules that provide background in substance abuse treatment and specifically in treatment of opioid use disorders and use of buprenorphine. The CD should be reviewed before the face-to-face training. An examination on the CD is to be printed and completed and brought to the course director at the face-to-face training.

The other “half” of the course is a classroom-style training in a 4.25 hour face-to-face training with a course director who has already obtained the waiver to practice with buprenorphine and is doing so in his/her community. The training will focus on clinical vignettes to help trainees think through “real life” experiences in opioid use disorders treatment and will have several “overview” lectures that will provide a knowledge base necessary for this practice.

The combined face-to-face and CD training will provide the 8 hours needed to obtain the waiver to prescribe buprenorphine in office-based treatment of opioid use disorders.
