- Federal Center for Substance Abuse Treatment (CSAT) endorses this national training initiative program.
- Qualified Physicians may dispense or prescribe specifically approved Schedule lll, IV and V narcotic medications for treatment of opioid addiction in office-based settings as part of The Drug Abuse Treatment Act (DATA) 2000.
- Physicians qualify after completion of not less than eight (8) hours of approved training.
- This course satisfies the DATA 2000 eight hour training requirement.
- Certificates will be provided to each physician who completes the training confirming the eight hours of training.
- Certificates may be mailed to the Secretary of Health and Human Services along with a Request for Waiver of the special registration requirements defined in the Controlled Substances Act.
- One-on-one mentoring via phone, email or site visit is available through the assistance provided via the Physician Clinical Support System (PCSS), www.pcssmentor.org.
This program is recommended for physicians with experience and/or interest in treating opioid dependence. It is also recommended for primary care, psychiatric, HIV, pain and addiction medicine physicians. For additional information, please visit:
At the conclusion of this meeting participants should be able to:
- Identify the clinically-relevant pharmacological characteristics of buprenorphine
- Identify and incorporate specific resources to establish office-based treatment with buprenorphine for patients with opioid dependence
- Describe and contrast the functions of full agonists, partial agonists and antagonists
- Apply special treatment considerations with adolescent opioid-dependent patients and list factors to consider in evaluating a pregnant opioid-dependent woman
- Describe symptoms of opioid withdrawal or intoxication that mimic symptoms of a psychiatric disorder
Topic: Overview of opioid dependence
Goal: Understand the rationale and need for opioid pharmacotherapy in the treatment of opioid dependence
Topic: Clinical use of buprenorphine and buprenorphine/naloxone, including induction maintenance, and supervised withdrawal, patient assessment and selection, and the efficacy and safety of buprenorphine/naloxone
Goal: Understand induction and maintenance protocols to allow you to help patients with an effective and safe medication
Topic: Legislative changes allowing office-based treatment of opioid dependence, including the Drug addiction Treatment Act of 2000
Goal: Understand specific information on the legislative and regulatory history of office-based opioid pharmacotherapy.
Topic: General opioid pharmacology and pharmacology of buprenorphine and buprenorphine/naloxone
Goal: Understand the pharmacological characteristics of opioids
Topic: Medical and psychiatric conditions in opioid dependent patients
Goal: Understand the current issues related to the medical and psychiatric conditions associated with opioid dependence (HIV/AIDS, Hepatitis C, depression and anxiety)
Topic: Special treatment populations
Goal: Understand the management of pain in patients with addictive disorders, and the management of adolescents and pregnant women with opioid dependence
Topic: Office procedures including confidentiality and record keeping
Goal: Gain the information, tools and contacts to set up office-based treatment with buprenorphine.
